Sweden Supports Morocco’s Autonomy Plan

Accra, Jan. 21, GNA – Sweden has expressed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a “credible basis” for negotiations aimed at reaching a final settlement to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, in light of the recently adopted UN Security Council Resolution 2797.

In an official statement issued by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Stockholm affirmed this position following a telephone conversation held on Monday between Sweden’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Malmer Stenengard, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

With this declaration, Sweden joins the majority of European Union member states and more than two-thirds of United Nations member countries that support the Autonomy Plan proposed by Morocco.

It is recalled that UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on 31 October 2025, underscores that a genuine autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty constitutes the most realistic and viable solution to the regional dispute.
