Sports China CorruptionCorruption: China FA bans 73 people for life, punishes 13 clubs

Beijing, Jan 29, (dpa/GNA) – Former national team coach Li Tie and ex-federation president Chen Xuyuan, are among 73 people banned for life by the Chinese Football Association (CFA).

The CFA said on Friday that in addition, 13 clubs are docked up to 10 points for the upcoming season and fined, as part of a crackdown against match-fixing, gambling and illegal activities in football.

It did not outline the offences, speaking only of “illegal transactions.”

Former Everton player Li, who won 91 caps as a player and was China coach 2019-2021, and Chen, who presided over the CFA 2019-2023, were sentenced to 20 years and life, respectively in corruption-related trials in 2024.

The hardest hit clubs are last season’s runners-up Shanghai Shenhua and Tianjin Jinmen Tiger who are docked 10 points and fined 1 million yuan ($144,000) each.

Title holders Shanghai Port and capital club Beijing Guoan have five points deducted and are each fined 400,000 yuan.

China has tried to become a major football power for years but has been hit by bribery and match fixing affairs several times.
