Mexico City, Jan 21, (dpa/GNA) – Mexico has extradited 37 members of drug cartels to the United States, Security Minister Omar GarcĂa Harfuch announced on Tuesday.
“These people were taken aboard seven aircraft of the armed forces to the cities of Washington, Houston, New York, Pennsylvania, San Antonio and San Diego,” GarcĂa Harfuch said.
Mexico has now handed over more than 90 criminals, including powerful drug bosses, to the US in three extraditions since last year after they were accused of crimes in the US.
GarcĂa Harfuch described the latest decision on X as part of a cooperation agreement with the US that respects the sovereignty of both states.
The extradited individuals, this time only second-tier drug bosses according to media reports, had posed a threat to public security in Mexico, the authorities said.
On Friday, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned against flights over parts of Latin America, including over waters of the Pacific and the Gulf of California in Mexico.
Powerful drug cartels are active in the affected region around the north-western coastal city of Mazatlán in the state of Sinaloa.
Following the US military operation on January 3 in Venezuela, the flight warning caused a stir in Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum ruled out there being US military activities within Mexican territory.
US President Donald Trump accuses Mexico of being governed by the drug cartels.
