Marrakech, Jan. 1, GNA – The group stages of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco have produced many thrills, and the competition is set to enter the knockout rounds.
The final round of group matches was entertaining as Cameroon edged Mozambique 2-1, while defending champions Ivory Coast produced a sensational comeback to defeat Gabon 3-2.
Algeria, already assured of the top spot in Group E, showcased their depth by resting nine starters yet cruising past Equatorial Guinea 3-1.
Sudan, despite their 2-0 defeat against Burkina Faso, emerged as one of the best third-placed teams, while the Stallions were confirmed runners-up in Group E.
Round of 16 matches
Sudan vs Senegal – Saturday, 3rd January
The drama kicks off with Sudan, the surprise package of the tournament, locking horns with Senegal, a side that edged them to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Mali vs Tunisia – Saturday, 3rd January
This encounter could prove a tricky one, with Mali having a good record against North African teams in recent past years. Tunisia certainly stands as slight favourites.
Morocco vs Tanzania – Sunday, 4th January
Following the stellar final group game against Zambia, the Atlas Lions of Morocco would be eyeing a place in the quarter-finals.
Cameroon vs South Africa – Sunday, 4th January
Next up, two heavyweights collide. Cameroon, with their rich AFCON pedigree, face a rejuvenated South African side brimming with confidence. This clash is more than a game. it would be a battle of pride and history.
Egypt vs Benin – Sunday, 4th January
The Pharaohs of Egypt are unbeaten in the tournament and would remain firm favourites against Benin, who only recorded their first AFCON win last Saturday against Botswana.
Mozambique vs Nigeria – Monday, 5th January
The Super Eagles have soared through the group stages, and now Mozambique stands in their way. Nigeria’s attacking flair has dazzled fans, but Mozambique’s disciplined defence could turn this into a tactical chess match.
Algeria vs DR Congo – Tuesday, 6th January
This fixture is certainly the match of the round as Algeria take on the unpredictable DR Congo.
Both teams have shown flashes of brilliance, and this encounter could swing either way, and there would be drama in Rabat.
Ivory Coast vs Burkina Faso – Tuesday, 6th January
The first round of knockout fixtures concludes with a West African derby. Ivory Coast’s star-studded squad faces Burkina Faso’s spirited warriors.
With regional bragging rights and a quarterfinal spot on the line, the game promises to be a thriller.
