Kumasi, Jan. 14, GNA – The management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has refuted media reports alleging that the hospital detains patients who are unable to pay their medical bills after treatment.
In a press statement copied to the Ghana News Agency, management of the country’s second-largest referral facility described such claims as misleading and a misrepresentation of its operations, stressing that KATH does not detain patients under any circumstances.
The statement explained that instances where patients remain in the hospital beyond their official discharge dates are largely due to financial challenges faced by patients or their families in settling outstanding medical bills incurred during treatment, and should not be misconstrued as detention.
It noted that during these extended stays, the hospital continues to provide care and support to affected patients, including meals and other basic necessities, while efforts are made to resolve outstanding financial obligations.
Management acknowledged the contributions of benevolent individuals, corporate institutions, faith-based organisations, and other groups that periodically intervene to assist patients in settling their bills.
KATH appealed to the media and the public to exercise restraint and verify information before publishing or sharing reports that could undermine public confidence in the institution.
The statement reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare with compassion, professionalism, and respect for the rights and dignity of all patients.
