Accra, Jan. 31, GNA – Mr Christian Tetteh Yohunu, Inspector-General of Police has expressed satisfaction with security arrangements for the ongoing New Patriotic Party presidential primary.
He said adequate security measures had been deployed to ensure a peaceful, free and fair process without intimidation.
Mr Yohunu made the remarks during a visit to the Dansoman Police polling station in the Ablekuma West Constituency to assess security arrangements for the exercise.
Meanwhile, Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said the conduct of early primaries marked effective use of the party’s constitution.
He said the timing of the polls would help resolve factional differences among aspirants and allow the eventual flagbearer sufficient time to campaign ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr Carlos Ahenkorah, a former Member of Parliament for Tema West, called for an end to factional divisions after the polls.
He said the party was expected to unite behind one candidate as its rallying point for the 2028 elections and indicated his readiness to promote unity and cohesion within the constituency.
In a related development, the police have arrested Mr Clement Baidoo, President of the Tertiary Student Confederacy, an official student wing of the NPP at the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, for allegedly photographing his ballot paper after voting.
The incident reportedly occurred at the Fiaseman Senior High School polling centre, where voting in the presidential primary is underway.
Voting has generally progressed steadily across the country as the party elects a new flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
An estimated 211,000 delegates are voting at more than 300 polling centres nationwide in what is regarded as a key internal exercise following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.
