Berekum, (Bono), Jan. 22, GNA-Mrs Lydia Nyamekye, a renowned hairdressers and manageress of the ‘Mama Lee Beauty Salon’ in the Berekum Municipality of the Bono Region have raised concerns about the resurgence of head lice, infesting many young women in the area.

Head lice are tiny, wingless insects that feed on the scalp, easiest to see at the hairline on the neck area and over the ears, and they often spread from person to person through close contact.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Berekum, Mrs Nyamekye described the situation as alarmingly worrying, saying the insects were mostly found in the heads of many women between 25 year and 45 years who visited the saloon.

She said some of the women with natural or braided hair carried the insects, unknowingly, and asked those who often experienced unusual itching on the scalp to wash their hair frequently to protect themselves.

Mrs Nyamekye said wet combing, smothering, or dehydrating were good for treatment, however added that she often applied the mixture of ‘naphthalene ball’ and some hair pomade to treat some of her customers infested with the lice.
