Accra, Jan.11, GNA-Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has affirmed his support for the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) delegation ahead of its Senior Athletics Championships.
From 12–16 May, the nation will play host to the rest of Africa, rolling out the red carpet for the continent’s finest athletes in what promises to be five days of high-octane competition, sporting excellence, and national pride.
Ahead of the championship, the CAA delegation, led by its President, Mr. Hamad Kalkaba Malboum paid a courtesy call on the Ghana Olympic Committee, signalling a hands-on inspection of Ghana’s readiness to host the competition.
Mr. Akpokavie while addressing the team expressed his excitement over the visit, noting that it reflected the CAA’s strong commitment to the development of sports.
“The GOC will do anything to ensure that this championships succeeds, I pledge. For the next five months, all of us will have to work hard in preparation for the continental event,” he said.
He noted that the competition would serve as a key platform to prepare top athletes for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Mr. Hamad Kalkaba Malboum expressed his gratitude to the Ghana Olympic Committee for its pledge to ensure the competition’s success, stressing that such commitment would not only elevate the championships but also strengthen Ghana’s reputation as a premier host of continental sporting events.
“After voting, Ghana won the bid to host the 2026 African senior Athletics championship which means Africa want to come to Ghana ” he said.
He said he was confident that Ghana would deliver one of the best senior championships ever staged.
After signing the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the CAA delegation also met with Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director General of the National Sports Authority.
