Ghana–India trade nears US$5bn as India marks 77th Republic Day

Accra, Jan. 28, GNA – Mr. Manish Gupta, India’s High Commissioner to Ghana, has announced that bilateral trade between Ghana and India has surged to nearly US$5 billion, ahead of an initial five-year roadmap.

He said an ambitious goal to double bilateral trade between the two countries to USD 6 billion within five years was already yielding tangible results.

Speaking at a ceremony to commemorate India’s 77th Republic Day at India House in Accra, Mr. Gupta said renewed economic engagement between resulted in the feat, noting that India now stood as one of Ghana’s foremost trading and investment partners, with Indian enterprises contributing over US$2 billion in capital across more than 900 vital projects.

“I am proud to announce that we are ahead of schedule; our trade has surged to nearly USD 5 billion in the current fiscal year alone,” he said.

He said Ghana has long been a true gateway for Indian industry and a trusted partner in its shared quest for prosperity.

“Ghana continues to serve as a strategic gateway for Indian industry and remained a trusted partner in our shared quest for prosperity,” he said.

Mr Gupta said India, with its current position as the world’s fourth-largest economy was pursuing its long-term development agenda dubbed, “Viksit Bharat 2047.”

He said the agenda which aimed at making the country fully developed by the centenary of its independence, aligned with the broader goal of advancing the collective development of the Global South.

Mr. Gupta, who raised a toast to the enduring friendship between India and Ghana as guests joined in celebrating India’s 77th Republic Day, said: “Our partnership is no longer just historical it is economic and strategic.”

“Today, we celebrate not only our own achievements but also the progress in Ghana, as we strive together to build a more equitable and prosperous world,” he added.

Mr. Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, who was also the Chief Guest, traced the roots of the bilateral relationship between Ghana and India to the early years of independence, highlighting the solidarity forged between India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru and Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

He said the state visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ghana in July 2025 elevated relationships between the two countries to a comprehensive partnership, the first of its kind in the sub-region.

Quoting Mr Modi, he noted that “India is not just a partner, but a co-traveller in Ghana’s development journey.”

Celebration

The Republic Day celebration held last night, January 27, 2026, was marked by a colourful display of Ghana–India cultural exchange, democratic values and the deepening partnership between the two nations.

Guests from government, Parliament, the diplomatic corps, traditional authorities, business, civil society, the media and the Indian community attended the event, hosted by Mr. Gupta and his wife, Mrs Nimeesha Gupta.

Dignitaries present included Mr Samuel Nartey George, who was the Chief Guest; Madam Dzifa Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, the Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, and Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, alongside other senior government officials.
