Dambai township to face economic stagnation if bridge over River Oti is diverted – Chonke Overlord

Dambai (O/R), Jan 14, GNA – Daasebre Atamafowiese Kwame Bonja II, Paramount Chief of the Chonke Traditional Area, has warned that diverting the proposed River Oti bridge away from Dambai township could spell economic disaster for the area.

In an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Daasebre Bonja II stressed that the current pontoon landing site is ideal for the bridge and crucial for the town’s economic growth.

“If the government diverts the bridge, Dambai township would experience a significant decline in economic activities. We have seen this happen in other towns where infrastructure development was diverted, leading to stagnation and decline,” he said.

Mr Safo Nketia, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), earlier explained that contractors and engineers had proposed an alternative route along Dambai Community-One to avoid demolishing structures and relocating ferry and boat operators, thereby reducing costs.

The project has hit a snag following the proposed route change, sparking debates among locals and authorities.

Mr Richard Dunugbe, a resident, and many others have backed the Paramount Chief, urging the government not to divert the bridge, warning that such a move would slow down development in the community.

“Kadjebi town is a prime example. When the main road bypassed the town, development slowed down significantly. We do not want that to happen to Dambai,” Mr Dunugbe added.
