Accra, Aug. 5, GNA – Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Acting Minister for Defence, has reaffirmed Government’s commitment to modernising military infrastructure to improve the welfare and operational readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

He said the completion of new accommodation, office and training facilities at Burma Camp reflected Government’s resolve to provide military personnel with infrastructure that supported operational efficiency and improved living and working conditions.

Dr Forson gave the assurance on Wednesday at the commissioning of the Butler Barracks accommodation and office complex, the Central Ordnance Depot Headquarters, the School of Ordnance and new facilities for the Ghana Armed Forces Central Band and Music School at Burma Camp in Accra.

The facilities comprise accommodation blocks, office complexes, classrooms, rehearsal halls and welfare amenities for the beneficiary units.

Dr Forson said the Ghana Armed Forces Central Band had also been provided with a modern music hall and auditorium to support its ceremonial, training and professional responsibilities.

He reiterated Government’s commitment to completing other strategic defence infrastructure projects, including the Afari Military Hospital, while pursuing sustainable approaches to military infrastructure development across the country.

Dr Forson commended the Military High Command, the Ministry of Defence, the contractor, Unique Development Limited, and the project implementation team for completing the project.

He urged military personnel to protect and maintain the facilities, describing them as national assets that should serve both current and future generations of the Armed Forces.

“I officially commission the Butler Barracks accommodation and office complex together with its complementary facilities for use by the Ghana Armed Forces,” he declared.

Air Vice Marshal Joshua Mensah-Larkai, Chief of Staff, GAF, described the project as a major investment in military readiness, saying the welfare of personnel remained fundamental to national security.

He said military barracks were not merely residential accommodation but the foundation of military life, where discipline, leadership, comradeship and the values of duty, loyalty and sacrifice were nurtured.

“Military readiness begins at home,” he said, adding that every investment in personnel translated into an investment in Ghana’s peace, stability and national development.

Air Vice Marshal Mensah-Larkai said the newly commissioned Butler Barracks compared favourably with similar facilities in armed forces around the world and reflected recognition of the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families.

Presenting the project report, Brigadier General Jonas Wiafe, Director of Engineering Services of the Ghana Armed Forces, said the project comprised 15 offices with conference rooms, a multi-purpose hall, two six-classroom lecture blocks, two 100-man student accommodation blocks and eight one-bedroom housing units.

He said the facilities were supported by water and electricity supply systems, access roads and drainage infrastructure to facilitate effective operations.

Brig. Gen. Wiafe warned personnel against damaging or altering any part of the facilities, saying the Military High Command would enforce strict sanctions against anyone who failed to maintain the infrastructure.

He expressed appreciation to Unique Development Limited, led by Mr Berti, Project Engineer Mr Mark Daniels and subcontractors for completing the project despite operational challenges.

The Butler Barracks, Central Ordnance Depot Headquarters and School of Ordnance form part of the Ghana Armed Forces’ modernisation programme to improve accommodation, training and administration, and enhance operational capacity nationwide.
