Leipzig, Germany, Aug 5 (dpa/GNA) – German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, has described the drone incident at Leipzig airport as a “hybrid attack scenario.”
“We must assume that this is a very serious security incident,” Dobrindt said on Wednesday evening at a press conference at the airport in the eastern German city.
Flights were temporarily suspended at Leipzig airport overnight, following the discovery of a drone carrying an explosive device. According to security sources, the drone was discovered near a Ukrainian Antonov AN-124 Condor transport aircraft. Police specialists seized the drone and defused the device after examining it with an X-ray machine.
While drone sightings are nothing new, the appearance of a drone equipped with explosives near an airport represents a new level of danger, Dobrindt said.
He said investigations are ongoing into the type of explosive, the drone’s design, origin and the question of who was responsible for the incident.
