Central Tongu MP, EU discuss parliamentary trade oversight

Adidome (V/R), Jan 16, GNA – Mr Alexander Roosevelt Hottordze, Member of Parliament for Central Tongu and Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Trade, Industry and Tourism, has met with a delegation from the European Union (EU) to discuss strengthening Parliament’s oversight role in Ghana’s trade governance.

The meeting focused on enhancing parliamentary scrutiny of trade agreements, including the EU–Ghana Interim Economic Partnership Agreement (iEPA) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), to ensure alignment with national development goals.

Mr Hottordze stressed Parliament’s constitutional mandate to review and ratify trade instruments, emphasising transparency, due diligence and stakeholder participation in trade policy formulation.

He also highlighted opportunities to deepen Ghana–EU trade cooperation, support small and medium-scale enterprises to meet export standards, promote value addition, and leverage Ghana’s role as host of the AfCFTA Secretariat to expand regional market access.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued dialogue to enhance Ghana’s participation in international trade and promote mutually beneficial cooperation.
