Burst transmission line disrupts water supply to Eastern Accra, GWL moves in to repair

Accra, Jan. 20, GNA – A major burst on a 42-inch transmission pipeline has disrupted water supply to the eastern parts of Accra, affecting households, businesses and essential services across a wide corridor, the Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL) has announced.

The incident occurred on Monday, January 19, 2026, prompting the immediate deployment of engineers and technical teams to the site to begin emergency repair works, a press release issued by the Communications Department of the utility company said.

Ghana Water Ltd. said the damaged transmission main was a critical artery in the water distribution network serving the Tema Metropolis and large sections of Accra, making the repair process both complex and time-sensitive.

“The size of the transmission main and the nature of the damage require careful handling to ensure safety, durability and efficiency,” the company said, adding that repair teams have been working around the clock since the fault was detected.

Areas affected by the disruption include the entire Tema Metropolis as well as Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, parts of East Legon, Nungua, Teshie and surrounding communities in the eastern corridor of the capital.

Residents in some of these areas reported dry taps and reduced pressure since Monday evening, raising concerns among households and small businesses that depend heavily on regular water supply for daily activities.

GWL appealed for patience and understanding from customers while repair works continue, assuring the public that restoring supply remained a top priority.

In the meantime, the company says it has made special arrangements to support essential service providers such as hospitals and schools during the period of interruption.

They expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the disruption and pledged to restore water supply immediately the repairs were completed.

“Further updates will be provided as the situation progresses,” the statement added.

GWL reiterated its commitment to maintaining and protecting critical water infrastructure and called on the public to support efforts aimed at ensuring reliable water supply across the country.
