Jasikan (O/R), Dec. 23, GNA— The Holy Father has appointed Rev. Fr. Simon Kofi Appiah as the new Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Jasikan, following the acceptance of the resignation of the incumbent Bishop, Most Rev. Gabriel Akwasi Ababio Mantey.
The resignation of Bishop Mantey from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Jasikan was accepted by the Holy Father in accordance with the canons of the Catholic Church, which require bishops to resign upon attaining the retirement age of 75 years.
With his appointment, Rev. Fr. Appiah becomes Bishop-Elect until his episcopal ordination.
The announcement of his appointment was formally made to the clergy and faithful of the Diocese by the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Most Rev. Julien Kaboré, during a visit to St. Peter
Claver Cathedral, Jasikan, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.
Rev. Fr. Simon Kofi Appiah, until his appointment, was a lecturer at the Department of Religion and Human Values at the University of Cape Coast and also served as a lecturer at the Major Seminary in Pedu, Cape Coast.
Bishop-Elect Appiah was born on July 1, 1964, at Teteman in Ghana. He undertook his philosophical and theological formation at St. Peter’s Regional Seminary, Pedu, Cape Coast.
He was ordained a priest on July 21, 1990, for the then Diocese of Keta-Ho. Following the establishment of the Diocese of Jasikan in 1994, he was incardinated into the new Diocese.
Over the years, Bishop-Elect Appiah has served the Church in various pastoral, academic, and administrative capacities. These include serving as Parish Vicar in the communities of Kpedze, Vakpo, and Kadjebi between 1990 and 1995.
He pursued further studies in Germany at the University of Tübingen from 1995 to 2001, where he obtained a Doctorate in Theological Ethics. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology from the University of London and a Diploma in Teaching in Higher Education from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya.
Between 1999 and 2001, he served as a Formator at St. Patrick Formation House. He later became the Diocesan Chancellor and Director of the Diocesan Office for the Pastoral Care of Vocations from 2001 to 2003 and subsequently worked as a Pastoral Collaborator at the Parish
of Kadjebi from 2003 to 2011.
Since 2011, Bishop-Elect Appiah has been engaged in academic formation, lecturing at the University of Cape Coast and the Major Seminary in Pedu.
The appointment of Bishop-Elect Appiah is expected to strengthen pastoral leadership and deepen evangelisation efforts within the Catholic Diocese of Jasikan.
