Hard to reach communities hail MP Gakpey for commissioning rural electrification project

Lawoshime (VR), Dec 31, GNA-Residents of some hard-to-reach communities in Keta Constituency have praised Mr Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, Keta Member of Parliament (MP), for commissioning a rural electrification project aimed at improving their lives.  

The project, an initiative by the MP and the Ministry of Energy & Green Transition, has electrified communities such as Laworshime, Mamime, Hagodzi, Wenyagor, Alakpakope and Agornugble in the municipality.  

Mr Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, during the commissioning ceremony, stated that the move was to fulfill a long-standing promise to bring electricity to the seven hard-to-reach communities in the area.  

“I am fully determined to address the human right issues of access to electricity, which is a human right, l cannot see my people suffering, thanks to the constructor and the communities for their collaborations,” he said.  

He explained that despite the Ministry of Energy citing resource constraints, he opted for cost-sharing, supplying materials, and transporting items to the challenging locations.  

He said the seven communities that benefited from the electrification project were not connected to the national grid, with residents traveling hours to access basic services like healthcare, among others.  

“This electricity supply is expected to boost the local economy, it will enable irrigation farming, preserve fish catches, and support businesses in many aspects to boost the local economy.  

The residents can now access healthcare services, charge phones, and enjoy improved living conditions, with nurses and healthcare providers been able to stay in the community.”  

He said the fertile land in the areas was ideal for vegetables and sugarcane farming, with electricity powering irrigation plants and mechanical sugar production expected to improve quality of life in the communities.  

Mr Wisdom Seade, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Keta, who also witnessed the occasion, praised the MP and the government for the timely initiative which would transform and reshape the quality of lives in the municipality.   

He said the government would implement better and influential initiatives in the subsequent years to help improve living conditions, healthcare access, and overall growth and development.  

He said the rural electrification project was expected to boost economic activities, enhance security, and improve access to information in the beneficiary communities and urged them to utilise the items for the benefit of all.  

Mr Evans Noener-Nash, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bridge Houses Ghana Limited, who was the contractor in charge of the project thanked the MP and residents for their support and acknowledged their various collaborative roles in the project’s success.  

He warned against illegal connections and urged residents to always engaged certified ECG workers for wiring to avoid fire outbreak and death or more punishment by the government.   

Mr Israel Mensah, the Assembly member of the area said the communities within the catchment areas were without electricity for more than 30 to 40 years and commended the MP and the government for the life changing initiative to boost better life.  

The project would also contribute to the overall socio-economic growth of the area, and the residents were hopeful for a brighter, more prosperous future with improved infrastructure and services.
