GNAPS holds maiden inter-school quiz to boost BECE preparedness

By Philip Tengzu

Wa, (UW/R), Dec. 02, GNA – The Wa Municipal branch of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) has organised its maiden inter-school quiz competition to enhance students’ preparedness for the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

In all, 15 schools out of a total of 50 GNAPS schools in the municipality participated in the quiz competition held in Wa.

Speaking at the opening of the competition, Mr Suleymana Mumuni, the Wa Municipal Chairperson of GNAPS, said the initiative was designed to “challenge teachers and students to teach and learn beyond what they normally do.”

The quiz composition focused on four core subjects, English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies, using past questions from 2017 to 2025 to expose the candidates to past BECE question patterns.

“Our thinking is that if we do this, candidates will be compelled to learn properly and familiarise themselves with the nature of the examination questions.

Even if the questions do not repeat, they come in a similar format, so exposing them to the past questions will boost their confidence”, Mr Mumuni stated.

The 15 schools participating in the quiz were grouped into five pools of three schools each, with winners advancing to the finals slated for December 13, 2025.

Mr Mumuni said the Association planned to make the quiz competition an annual preparatory activity and that they would hold another round of the competition in January before the candidates sit for the BECE.

He said the Wa Municipal GNAPS had outlined an action plan which included the introduction of a Best Teacher Award to motivate teachers in member schools as part of efforts to improve academic performance across private schools.

The GNAPS Chairperson added that the Association would also conduct a common mock examination for all private schools in the municipality.

He said the mock examination would be written at a central location with external invigilators and police officers present, to simulate the official BECE environment to enable the students have an experience of the examination.

“It will be a dress rehearsal towards their main exams so that when they get there, nothing will surprise them.

Once they understand the answers here, it will make things easier during the final exams”, he added.

Mr Mumuni reiterated his commitment, as the Municipal Chairperson of GNAPS, to leading the Association to improve standards and performances in private basic education within the municipality.

He also encouraged the students to take their studies very seriously to enable them to excel in the academic endeavours, including the BECE.
