Akansa Roads Under Rehabilitation

Ashaiman, Dec. 15, GNA – Residents of the Akansa Electoral Area in the Atadeka New York enclave of the Kpone-Katamanso District, have continued to grapple with poor road conditions since the establishment of the community.

Although attempts were made between 2012 and 2016 to address the situation, several projects remained uncompleted, leading to the further deterioration of the road network over the years.

Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, the Assemblyman for the area, said efforts were now focused on improving the future of the Akansa Electoral Area, rather than dwelling on past challenges.

He said drainage systems constructed in 2012 from the ‘Airport to the New York’ main roads had helped reduce flooding by providing channels for rainwater flow.

Mr Ibrahim said some progress had also been made in recent days, with roads being filled with sand and levelled to improve its accessibility.

He attributed the ongoing intervention to the commitment of the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Mr Ernest Norgbey, saying the MP had shown interest in developing the area through the project.

The rehabilitation exercise was expected to cover communities including Sele, Kokompe, Atadeka New York and parts of Katamanso, Mr Norgbey said.

Some residents, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), expressed mixed reactions to the ongoing road works.

Some commercial motorcycle riders described the initiative as positive; however, they raised concerns about the quality of execution, noting that the quantity of sand used to fill the potholes was inadequate.

They also complained about the absence of a water tankers to suppress dust after the roads were levelled, stating that the dust posed health risks, especially to motor riders.

Mr Kwame Owusu, a resident, expressed hope that the current ongoing roadworks would be of quality to last for many years.

Mr Owusu further stressed that the provision and maintenance of drainage must also be prioritised, noting that without these, the area would continue to face challenges in achieving durable, tarred roads, as water would be stagnant on the roads and cause their deterioration.

Despite the concerns raised, residents acknowledged the efforts of the assemblyman and his collaboration with the Member of Parliament to address the road challenges and expressed optimism that the project would yield lasting improvements.
