14 reported injured in drone attack on Russian city of Cheboksary

Moscow, Dec 9, (dpa/GNA) – Debris from a Ukrainian drone crashed into a residential building in the Russian city of Cheboksary on the Volga river, injuring 14 people, a top regional official said on Tuesday.

The deputy leader of the Russian republic of Chuvashia, of which Cheboksary is the capital, wrote on Telegram that a child was among the injured.

All of the victims are receiving medical care, Vladimir Stepanov said.

According to media reports, up to seven explosions were heard in Cheboksary, which is located around 1,000 kilometres from Ukraine.

There are several defence factories in the industrial city.

Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry in Moscow reported the shooting down of 121 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory and Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

Four drones were shot down over the neighbouring Nizhny Novgorod region. The ministry did not confirm drone attacks over Chuvashia.

Overnight, Russia attacked Ukraine with 110 drones, according to the Ukrainian air force, in nine different parts of the country. The military did not provide any information on the extent of the damage or possible casualties.

Kiev is increasingly using drones to attack objects, mostly related to the oil and gas industry, far beyond the Russian border.

The damage and casualty figures are disproportionate to the massive destruction caused by Russia and the many deaths and injuries in Ukraine since the war broke out in February 2022.
