Wontumi’s Trial: Attorney General to call four witnesses

Accra, Nov. 12, GNA – The Attorney General will call four witnesses in the case in which Benard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is being held for alleged engagement in illegal mining in a forest reserve at Samreboi in the Western Region. 

At the hearing on Wednesday, State Attorneys informed the court that they would call four witnesses to make their cases. 

The state indicated that it had filed further disclosures and same had been served on Chairman Wontumi’s lawyers 

Lawyers for Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, informed the court that they were served with further disclosures comprising witness statements. 

According to defence counsel, the disclosures were filed yesterday (Tuesday) and they needed to study them. 

The matter has been adjourned to November 27, 2025, to commence with Case Management Conference. 

Chairman Wontumi, the Manager of Akonta Mining Company Limited, is held for allegedly purposely facilitating an unlicensed mining operation at Samreboi. 

His accomplice, Kwame Antwi, a co-director who is at large, has been charged with assignment of mineral rights without approval. 

Joined in the criminal suit is Chairman Wontumi’s firm, Akonta Mining Company Limited. 

Boasiako has denied the charge, and he is currently on GHC15 million cedis bail granted by the court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay.
