Sekondi (W/R), Nov. 18, GNA – The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has supported some Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with items and cash to help empower them economically.

A total of 60 beneficiaries received deep freezers, ice chests, industrial sewing machines, barbering tools, and sacks of charcoal, among other items, while others got some cash amounts.

The donation, worth about GHC265,137.39, formed part of the disbursement of the three per cent common fund for PWDs to support their medical, business, and educational needs.

Mr Frederick F. Faidoo, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), who presented the items to the beneficiaries, at Sekondi, said the presentation formed part of the Assembly’s activities to ensure PWDs within the Metropolis were economically independent, and to improve upon their living standards.

He advised them to put the items received to good use, saying they should use them to better their lives.

He said: “We are telling them that they should not misuse the items and the cash we have given them, but use them to improve their living conditions, because we have had some cases where some of them go and sell-off the items and then go back to square one.”

Mr Richard Asare, Western Regional Chairman for Ghana Federation of Disability Organisation, expressed gratitude to the STMA for the support, and said the items received would go a long way to empower them to reduce their poverty levels and in their families.

He asked his colleagues to take proper care of the items and use the monies for the intended purposes.
