Accra, Nov. 18, GNA – Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has advised the youth to uphold discipline, dedication and patriotism, describing these virtues as the bedrock of a progressive society.
He said the three principles worked hand in hand and were essential for young people to realise their aspirations.
The IGP gave the advice when he addressed students of Okuapemman Senior High School, his alma mater, during its 68th Speech and Prize-Giving Day and Homecoming.
The event was held on the theme: “Reconnecting with our core principles of discipline, dedication and patriotism; inspiring hope in the younger generation.”
Mr Yohuno said discipline, dedication and patriotism were pillars that guided one’s actions and formed the foundation for lasting success.
“Without these virtues, no amount of education or talent can sustain progress,” he said.
He urged the students not to be obsessed with quick success without hard work, noting that the country was witnessing an increasing number of young people turning to cybercrime, drug misuse, violent offences and other illegal activities in their quest for rapid wealth.
He added that the rise in betting and gambling addictions was also destroying many young lives.
“Some young people borrow money to gamble, hoping to get rich overnight, only to lose everything and sink into depression, with some attempting suicide,” he said.
Mr Yohuno cautioned the youth against shortcuts, saying real success required time, effort and perseverance.
He called for transformational educational policies that focused on developing talents and vocations through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which he said would equip young people with the skills and knowledge needed to build a brighter future.
He said such reforms would help bridge the gap between education and industry and facilitate a smooth transition into the workforce.
The event attracted old students, traditional leaders and other stakeholders to share experiences and encourage the students to aim for excellence.
