Kumasi, Nov. 4, GNA – Five male inmates of the Kumasi Central Prisons have advanced to the Senior High School level to further their education after participating in the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The inmates, despite their current situation, obtained very impressive aggregates of 14, 17, 18, 19, and 21 to advance to the SHS level of education within the prison.

Currently, about 45 students are enrolled in both the Junior High School (JHS) and SHS of the Kumasi Central Prison, with 25 and 20 students, respectively.

Additionally, six inmates are being prepared to participate in the November/December examination to enable them to further their education at the tertiary level.

All the students in the SHS are compelled to study General Arts due to the inadequate structures available for students to choose their preferred courses and enrol more students.

Chief Superintendent of Prisons (CSP) Richard Bukari, the Public Relations Officer of the Kumasi Central Prisons, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the school had insufficient teaching and learning materials.

Hence, the school relied solely on external donors for the teaching and learning materials, which sometimes arrived late for the students to use.

Mr Bukari indicated that despite the challenges faced by the inmate students, their zeal and determination encouraged the prison command to establish the tertiary school level in the prison.

“Next year January, students with the qualified requirements will be enrolled to the Jackson Educational College to begin their first year tertiary education,” Mr Bukari disclosed.

He explained that the prison was not only a correctional centre but a place for reformation and rehabilitation, where inmates were equipped with the necessary skills to benefit their future after serving their sentences.
