Accra, Nov. 7, GNA- The Bank of Ghana hosted over 250 school pupils from five different schools for a currency education session as part of the 60th Anniversary celebration of the Cedi.
The session focused on the Cedi’s history and evolution, and fun games.

The schools are Independence Avenue Basic School (1&2), St. George’s Anglican Basic School, Bishop Mixed Basic School, Accra Sempe School, and St. Barnabas Basic School.
Dr. Johnson Asiama, the Governor of the Central Bank, encouraged the pupils to take their studies seriously, emphasising they were the country’s future.

He shared words of wisdom with the pupils, alongside his Deputies, Dr. Zakari Mumuni and Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu.
The day ended with music, lunch, and smiles all around, a true celebration of learning, legacy, and national pride.
The Bank launched the 60th Anniversary celebration of the Cedi on the theme: “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”

On July 19, 1965, Ghana officially adopted the Cedi as its national currency, symbolising economic independence and the country’s transition from colonial rule.
Since its inception, the Cedi has undergone significant reforms, redesigns, and policy evolutions, serving as both a monetary instrument and a national emblem of resilience, self-determination, and progress.

The celebration is also an opportunity to enhance policy literacy, promote the Bank’s Clean Note Campaign, and inspire the next generation to appreciate and protect the integrity of the Cedi.
It is intended to commemorate the evolution of the Cedi and its impact on national development, as well as to educate the public on currency usage, security features, and the relevance of monetary policy.
