Syria Interior Ministry: Vote went ahead safely without interference

Damascus, Oct 6, (dpa/GNA) – The spokesman for the Syrian Ministry of Interior, Noureddine al-Baba, confirmed that the parliamentary elections concluded in all polling stations without any security incidents.

In a statement to dpa on Sunday, al-Baba said, “The Syrian Interior Ministry secured all polling stations—50 in total across the country, and ensured the safety of more than 7,000 members of the electoral committees. The process went very smoothly from a security standpoint, with hundreds of Interior Ministry personnel deployed to protect citizens participating in the elections, as well as hundreds of media correspondents distributed among all polling centres.”

Al-Baba stressed that the vote marked the first time elections in Syria were held without interference from intelligence agencies or regime officials in the selection of candidates, and that the process proceeded freely.

Syria is holding parliamentary elections on Sunday for the first time since the overthrow of long-time authoritarian ruler Bashar al-Assad, a landmark moment in the country’s fragile transition after nearly 14 years of war.
