Soul musician D’Angelo dies aged 51

New York, Oct 14, (dpa/GNA) – The US singer D’Angelo, who became world famous with the song “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” has died of cancer at the age of 51, US media reported on Tuesday, citing his family.

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” his family said in a statement quoted by numerous US media outlets.

D’Angelo fought a “prolonged and courageous battle with cancer,” they wrote. “We are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.”

Born Michael Archer in Virginia in 1974, D’Angelo had been making music since he was a child. His debut album, “Brown Sugar,” was released in 1995 and was nominated for several Grammys.

In 2000, he achieved a worldwide breakthrough with his album “Voodoo,” which included the smash hit “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” “Black Messiah” followed in 2014.

D’Angelo had repeatedly withdrawn from the public eye, and struggled with drug and alcohol addiction.
