Accra, July 10, GNA – Mr Kwasi Anthony Sarpong, Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), on Friday joined staff of the Authority in a nationwide cleanup exercise.

The exercise formed part of a national campaign launched by President John Dramani Mahama following recent flooding in Accra and several coastal communities, which caused loss of lives, destruction of property and displacement of residents.

Mr Sarpong urged Ghanaians to make environmental sanitation a daily responsibility.

“We want to encourage everyone to participate in these two days, but also most importantly, to see it as an ongoing daily life. All of us must take the responsibility and interest in our environment from time to time to do the cleaning,” he said.

Mr Sarpong He expressed sympathy to individuals, families and businesses affected by the flooding and assured taxpayers of the Authority’s support regarding any tax relief measures available under the law.

He noted that maintaining clean surroundings was essential for protecting lives and property, especially at a time when clogged drains and poor waste management practices were worsening flood risks.

Mr Sarpong said GRA staff were cleaning areas around the Authority’s Head Office, the Accra Sports Stadium enclave and the Presbyterian Church area, while other teams supported activities in various parts of the capital alongside personnel from other state institutions and security agencies.

He urged citizens not to wait for government interventions before addressing sanitation challenges within their communities.

“If a gutter close to you is choked and you know it is true, don’t wait for government. Take the responsibility to clean it. That way, we make the environment safe for us all,” he said.

Mr Sarpong also called on businesses to support sanitation initiatives in their operational areas by providing tools and logistical assistance to community members undertaking cleanup activities.
