Riga, Oct 8, (dpa/GNA) – An Estonian court has sentenced a man to four years and 11 months in jail, for spying for Russia after finding him guilty of espionage, harmful to the Republic of Estonia, prosecutors in Tallinn reported on Tuesday.
The man, an Estonian citizen, had served in the country’s volunteer army. He was found to have passed on information on military exercises and local life in Narva, a city on the Russian border, to Russia’s FSB domestic intelligence agency.
The court found that he had cooperated with an FSB officer between March and May this year, passing him information. He was arrested at the first opportunity, following a military exercise, as he was travelling to Russia to meet the FSB agent.
Judgement was passed following a settlement between those involved in the case.
The Kaitseliit, or Estonian Defence League, trains civilians in weapons use during their free time. It operates in support of the country’s regular forces and can be called up in the event of war or for providing assistance.
