Accra, Oct. 16, GNA – The Dansoman Circuit Court has discharged Hopeson Adorye, a member of the Movement for Change, who was standing trial for publication of false news.
He was picked up and arraigned in May 2024 by the police over claims of detonating explosives in the Volta Region during the 2016 General Election.
The case docket was sent to the Office of the Attorney General for advice.
The matter has, however, suffered several adjournments at the instance of the prosecution.
The court, therefore, held that “in the circumstances the case is struck out for want of prosecution and accused is discharged.”
The self-confession by Adorye over the detonation of the explosives went viral, leading to calls for his arrest and interrogation.
Facing a charge of publication of false news, he denied the offence and the court admitted him to bail in the sum of GHC20,000 with two sureties, one to be justified.
As part of the bail condition, Afotey also had to report to the police once a week.
