Accra, Sept. 1, GNA – The Nmati Quarter in the La-Dadekotopon Traditional area has been adjudged winner of the 2025 Nyɛ Awo Kpakpa Kpokpoi Cooking Contest.
They received one thousand Ghana Cedis, cooking utensils, a blender as well as a treat at the La Beach Hotel.
The contest, an initiative of Madam Rita Odoley Sowah, the Member of Parliament for the area aims at instilling and passing on the skills of preparing Kpokpoi, the traditional meal of the Ga people to the next generation.
The annual contest which was established in 2022 brought together representtaives from all eight quarters including Kowe, Abese, Dzrasɛɛ, Nmatii, Abafum, Agbawe, Lɛshie, Klanaa and one Clan House Anɛhɔ.
The competiting teams were provided with food stuffs such pam nuts, maize and tuna; the primary ingredients for the preparation of the kpokpoi, and were assessed based on food handling, preparation, cleanliness, food presentation as well as packaging.
Speaking at the event, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts, lauded the initiative, stating that the Ghanaian customs and tradition must be upheld.
She urged all to view them as vital for cultural identity and economic development, and impressed on other MPs to emulate the gesture to encourage the young generation understand their Culture and tradition.
Touching on the relevance of the contest, Madam Odoley Sowah said the initiative stemmed from the fact that the elderly who have the knowledge in the preparation of Kpokpoi were aging, and as such the knowledge must be transfered to the younger generation for posterity.
She expressed appreciation to the participants and her partners for the support in undertaking such initiative.
A member of the Nmati Quarter, winners of the 2025 contest, commended the MP for the initiative, noting that most young people have express interest in learning and acquiring the skill of preparing the traditional meal.
Since it’s inception, the cooking contest has gained grounds with the involvemnet of many including the Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts, Madam Dzifa Gomashie.
