Ho (V/R), Sept. 17, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in partnership with Fidelity Bank Ghana, has rolled out a climate action awareness campaign in the Ho Municipality to tackle the adverse effects of climate change and poor sanitation.

At community engagements in Ho-Dome and Ziave Dzogbe, Rev. Vincent Adzika, the Ho Municipal NCCE Director, warned that plastic pollution was one of the fastest-growing environmental threats, directly fueling climate change through greenhouse gas emissions during production and disposal.

He noted that the poor management of plastics and unsanitary practices had worsened urban filth, contributing to the outbreak of diseases such as typhoid fever, malaria, and cholera.

Rev. Adzika urged citizens to embrace attitudinal change, stressing that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water), and 15 (Life on Land) required active civic responsibility.

“Our performance as a country in managing plastic waste is far from encouraging. Citizens must act as watchdogs to protect the environment,” he said.

Togbui Dede III, the Dutor (Chief) of Ho-Dome, also cautioned his subjects against ignoring the health risks of poor sanitation, citing the damaging effects of typhoid on vital organs of the human body.

At Ziave Dzogbe, Togbui Afari IV, called on the Ho Municipal Assembly to restore hygiene at the Central Market and address the rising presence of mentally ill persons around the area, which undermined sanitation and safety.

The Climate Action Awareness Campaign, sponsored by Fidelity Bank, is being implemented in selected districts across five regions.

Activities include civic festivals, inter-school competitions, clean-up exercises, radio discussions, and engagements with community and identifiable groups.
