Obuasi (Ash), Sept. 06, GNA – The Obuasi Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has held a civic engagement forum to empower out-of-school youth with knowledge on strengthening the rule of law and fighting corruption.
The programme brought together 50 young people between the ages of 13 and 35, comprising 35 males and 15 females.
Mr. Samuel Yeboah Asante from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and Nana Owusu Aduomi, a local governance expert and traditional ruler, facilitated the engagement.
They led discussions on the principles of the rule of law, civic rights, and Ghana’s legal frameworks on anti-corruption, including the Whistleblowers Act.
The highly interactive session encouraged participants to ask questions, share ideas, and make contributions on issues relating to transparency, accountability, and good governance.
Various forms of corruption were explained, alongside the legal instruments available to combat them.
Some participants revealed that it was their first time learning about the Whistleblowers Act and expressed enthusiasm about the confidentiality and protection it offers, as well as the rewards for reporting corrupt acts.
Mr. Lawrence Nyame, the Municipal NCCE Director, acknowledged the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the European Union (EU), who funded the programme.
The NCCE recommended that similar civic forums be organised quarterly, with participants increased from 50 to 100, to broaden awareness on the rule of law and the fight against corruption.
