Fomena (Ash), Sept. 09, GNA – The Fifty 50 club, an Obuasi-based non-government organisation (NGO), has donated 30 metal bunk beds, worth GHc 24,000 to the Fomena T. I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School.
The gesture is aimed at easing the accommodation challenges at the Ahmed House, the only female dormitory in the school, which was devastated by a fire outbreak in February this year.
The fire outbreak displaced more than 200 female students of the school.
The donation forms part of a series of interventions the Club has outlined over a two-month period to commemorate its 5th anniversary.
In early September, the Club donated a laptop and medical equipment to the Bodwesango Catholic Hospital and paid the school and hostel fees for a third-year medical student at KNUST, altogether amounting to GHS 55,000.
At a brief ceremony to present the beds, the President of the Club, Mr. Jacob Edmund Acquah, said the support reflected the Club’s mission to positively impact lives and improve livelihoods.
He explained that the Club swiftly responded to the request from the school after the fire destroyed more than 100 beds and forced students into makeshift accommodation.
“We responded swiftly knowing how urgent the situation was,” he said, adding, “we consider this a critical support to education, which is a key focus area of our Club.
“These beds will serve 60 students, and we will bring additional beds to support 40 more.”
Mr. Osman Yaw Baidoo, Headmaster of the school, receiving the items, expressed deep gratitude to the Fifty 50 Club, describing the gesture as a huge relief.
He recounted how the fire compelled the authorities to redistribute the affected girls to other dormitories, creating severe overcrowding and discomfort.
He said: “The fire destroyed more than 100 beds, which meant we had to distribute the girls among other dormitories.
“This caused so much discomfort, but now that these beds are in, we are going to install them and bring the girls back to their original dormitories.”
Mr. Baidoo further highlighted that the donation had not only eased the school’s burden of providing alternative accommodation but had also ensured the welfare and psychological well-being of the students, which was crucial for their academic journey.
As part of its anniversary projects, the Fifty 50 Club is also set to commence the construction of a GHc 70,000 children’s weighing center at Kyekyewere, a suburb of Obuasi.
