Vienna, Sept 2, (dpa/GNA) – An 85-year-old man out hiking with his wife and dog, died in hospital after he was seriously injured, when they were attacked by a herd of cows in the central Austrian municipality of Ramsau am Dachstein, police reported on Monday.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. The 82-year-old woman is in hospital with serious injuries, but is reported out of danger.
The couple from Vienna encountered a number of cows along with their calves on a forest path. The frightened cows then charged them, trampling them underfoot.
Eyewitnesses and staff at a mountain hut gave first aid, and called the emergency services.
Hikers in the Austrian mountains frequently have dangerous, sometimes fatal, encounters with cows. Cattle also see dogs as a threat.
