Berlin policeman probed for assaulting Irish pro-Palestine protester

Berlin, Sept 3, (dpa/GNA) – A German policeman is under investigation, after punching an Irish pro-Palestinian protester twice in the face, during a demonstration in Berlin.

Police said on Tuesday that proceedings are under way into the officer’s conduct, on suspicion of assault.

Video footage of the bloody incident on Thursday led to protests in Ireland, including outside the German embassy in Dublin, against what demonstrators called police brutality in Berlin.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, said he was “deeply concerned,” while the Irish embassy in Berlin is also in contact with police.

Irish Bloc Berlin, an Irish protest group, said the person’s nose was fractured, while their arm was broken during their arrest, requiring them to undergo surgery.

Several criminal charges have been filed against the police officer, police said.

The police also said that the officer has been “deliberately defamed” online and received death threats, adding that investigations have also been opened into the threats.
