Accra, Sept. 8, GNA – Mr Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ayawaso East Assembly, says the Assembly has made significant progress in sanitation management.
He said the Assembly had engaged 15 additional women sweepers and a task force to replace the Youth Employment Agency sweepers and strengthen daily cleaning.
He said the Assembly had ensured strict enforcement of sanitation by-laws, which had led to the prosecution of 11 offenders, with 8 more cases currently before the court.
“We have intensified the Operation Clean Your Frontage with strong support from the Environmental Health Officers and Assembly Members, resulting in tremendous improvement in community cleanliness,” he said.
Mr Ibrahim said with only one compactor and tricycles, the Assembly had ensured regular collection and disposal of refuse, preventing waste accumulation, adding that the overgrown areas across the municipality were being cleared to improve safety and environmental health.

The MCE said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on some of the activities the Assembly had undertaken since they were sworn into office in May 2025.
He announced the installation of some streetlighting lamps in various electoral areas within the municipal Assembly.
That, he explained, was done through the installation of new lamps and extension of street lighting with treated wooden poles by the Electoral Area Project at Kanda and Ruga as of the second quarter of 2025.
Mr Ibrahim expressed concerns about the theft of 35 metal drain covers in the Assembly which had become a significant concern for public safety within the municipality.
”These thefts have resulted in open drains, posing risks to pedestrians and drivers, especially in high-traffic areas such as Obasanjo Highway, Nima Police Station, and Nima Township,” he said.
He said the Assembly was fully committed to addressing the theft of metal drain covers and ensuring the safety of its residents.
In response to the thefts, he said the Assembly had initiated the process of replacing stolen drain covers, stressing that so far, 8 metal gratings have been replaced with sturdy metal slabs in Nima.
The MCE stressed that the Assembly had increased surveillance and enforcement with the youth groups in Nima to improve and regulate the activities of scrap dealers within the municipality.
Mr Ibrahim stated that public education campaigns would be launched to inform residents about the dangers of theft and encourage reporting of suspicious activities.
