Accra, Aug. 22, GNA- Afram Publications Ltd has launched “Suspects in the School- Secrets and Surprising Solutions,” a new book designed for all children, including those with reading disorders like Dyslexia.
Launched at the British Council Hall in Accra, the 311-paged book breaks new ground by combining compelling storytelling with a dyslexia-friendly design, making it a novel addition to Ghana’s children’s literature.
Dyslexia is a learning disability that is neurological in origin. It primarily affects a person’s ability to read, spell, and write.
The author, Ms. Margaretha Ubels, an inclusive education expert with over two decades of experience, stated that the book was intentionally crafted to ensure no child is left out of the joy of reading.
“The formatting and typeset are Dyslexia-friendly so that individuals who have reading disorders will have significantly less difficulty. We encourage them to engage with it, to taste the joy of reading stories despite the challenges they usually encounter with written text.,” she said.
She noted that the focus on accessibility means the book features specialized fonts, spacing, and background colours that reduce visual stress and improve readability for dyslexic readers, a rare feature in locally published children’s books.
The author said beyond the book’s accessible design, its content promotes inclusivity through its stories. “It addresses challenges faced by children with different abilities and tackles broader societal issues like plastic pollution and corruption, fostering responsible citizenship.”
“The book follows three students as they try to make sense of puzzling situations in their school. Through this, they emerge not just as detectives, but as caring advocates and leaders .They become role models for responding to today’s realities in schools across the country,” she said.
Ms. Rebecca Ekpe, Vice President, Ghana Journalists’ Association( GJA) said inclusive education was almost a taboo in some educational institutions in Ghana for a myriad of reasons.
She said stakeholders underestimated the importance of inclusive education to the overall development of a child.
The book, she said, emphasised the fact that every child was unique and hence the need to embrace his or her unique special make up.
She said the book drew attention to the need to harness the unique qualities in every human being because everyone cannot be the same, variety is the spice Of life.
Ms. Harriet Adelaide Tagoe, the Managing Director of Afram Publications Limited, the publishers, said the book was available at Blue Knight Bookshop, EPP Book Services, Book Nook, Afram Publications Limited office in Kumasi and other bookshops.
