Akatsi (VR), Aug. 19, GNA – The Akatsi South Municipal Health Directorate has been ranked the third-best performing health directorate among the 18 districts in the Volta Region in the 2025 half-year health performance review.

The Municipal Director of Health Services, Ms Justine Sefakor Alornyo, disclosed this during the Municipal half-year performance review covering January to June 2025. She described the feat as a reflection of a “shared commitment” to advancing the health and well-being of the people.

Statistics available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) showed that Keta Municipality and North Dayi tied for first place, followed by Akatsi South in third position. Afadjato South and North Tongu placed fourth, Kpando and South Tongu sixth, Ho eighth, South Dayi ninth, and Central Tongu tenth.

Ms Alornyo highlighted some notable achievements, including a mass hypertension screening exercise that led to case detection and referrals, as well as the posting of midwives to CHPS facilities at Wuxor, Gui, Dzogadze, and Live.

On key performance indicators, she said 1,236 pregnant women were registered for Antenatal Care (ANC), representing 63.33 per cent coverage, up from 55.24 per cent in 2024. Under disease surveillance, the directorate managed 24 tuberculosis cases with no deaths, while suspected cases of measles, yellow fever, and acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) all tested negative.

“We screened 886 individuals for hypertension and referred 175. All 1,029 deliveries in the Municipality were immunised with BCG, Penta, and Measles-Rubella vaccines,” she stated.

She added that the municipality recorded 1,029 supervised deliveries during the review period, a slight drop from 1,039 in 2024, attributing progress made so far to continuous education and advocacy through multiple channels.

Despite the gains, Ms Alornyo outlined major challenges, including high teenage pregnancy rates, inadequate infrastructure, lack of water and accommodation facilities, transportation constraints, and deteriorating health infrastructure. She noted that the Wute Health Centre, in particular, was in a state of disrepair and prone to snake invasions, posing risks to both staff and patients.

“The Municipality continues to record high teenage pregnancies. A total of 339 cases were recorded during the period under review, including two girls aged 10–14. Out of 144 teenage deliveries, one was by a girl within the same age range,” she disclosed.

Ms Alornyo expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their collective efforts, stressing that quality healthcare delivery must remain a lived reality for residents.

The Akatsi South Municipality is served by 40 health facilities, including two hospitals, seven health centres, 28 CHPS compounds, and three clinics, staffed by dedicated and resilient health professionals.
