Accra: Police to close some roads on Friday, August 15, ahead of State Funeral for helicopter crash victims

Accra, Aug 14, GNA – The Ghana Police service has announced the temporary closure of some roads in Accra on Friday, August 15, 2025 in connection with the State Funeral for the victims of the recent military helicopter crash at the Independence Square.

It announced also, additional traffic management measures to ensure public safety and smooth traffic management.

A statement signed by Madam Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Assistant Commissioner of Police, and Director, Public Affairs, said: “Selected roads will be temporarily closed, and traffic diversions will be implemented…”

The roads designated to be closed include:

  • 28th February Road from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction.
  • Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on the Lokko Street.
  • Castle Road from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light.
  • Starlet 91 Road will be closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection

Traffic Diversion

Additionally, the Police advised motorists to note the following diversions:

1. Traffic from La, Labone, and Osu on the 28th February Road towards the Accra Central Business District and the Ministries would be diverted onto the Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light, to link-up with the Oxford Street.

2. Motorists from Lokko Street, Osu towards the Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street in Osu.

3. Traffic from the John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square would be diverted onto the Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection.

4. Traffic from AU Circle towards the Castle Road through Osu Cemetery Traffic Light would be diverted onto the Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads, to link with Abdul Nasser Road in front of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

Approved Vehicle Parking

The statement said only vehicles affixed with approved entry stickers would be allowed into the Black Star Square arena.

Designated Car Parks

The following areas have been earmarked for car parking:

  • VVIP, VIP – Black Star Square
  • The forecourt of the State House
  • The International Conference Centre
  • Access Bank Car park
  • The Osu Cemetery Car Park
  • The Accra Sports Stadium Car park
  • The Ministries Areas
  • Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park
  • Marine Drive Football Park
  • Afua Sutherland Car Park

“Motorists are further advised to take note of these arrangements and plan alternative routes before embarking on their journey”, the statement said.

The general public, especially motorists, are once again urged to cooperate with the Police and other security agencies to ensure effective traffic management and control, it added.

Towing/Recovery of Vehicles

The Police said, Security vehicles and vehicles carrying dignitaries would be allowed through the road closures only after thorough checks.

The Police assured that Officers would be at hand to direct and assist motorists to the appropriate car parks and roads.

“Towing/Recovery trucks would be available to tow off any abandoned/disabled/wrongly parked vehicles in and around event grounds.
