Zuarungu (U/E), July 21, GNA – The Zuarungu Senior High School (SHS) in the Bolgatanga East District has been closed indefinitely, following a violent clash among students over allegations of mobile phone theft.

The incident, which occurred over the weekend, reportedly began after three students were accused of stealing mobile phones belonging to some other students.

The accusations quickly degenerated into a confrontation, sparking a physical altercation that escalated into a full-blown riot on campus.

The violent clash extended to a provision shop located in inside the school’s fenced wall and was set ablaze before security personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces were deployed to restore order on the campus.

In their effort to restore calmness, a student allegedly attempted to disarm a police officer in the evacuation of students but failed.

“In the course of the chaos, there was an attempt by one of the students to snatch a police weapon, which is a very serious security concern,” Mr Donatus Atanga Akamugri, the Upper East Regional Minister said.

The incident had created tension and an unsafe environment, especially for students who were from far distances, but authorities promptly arranged for their evacuation under tight security.

Four students have been arrested in connection with the clash and are currently in police custody assisting investigation.

Mr Akamugri clarified that no firearms were found on any of the students and that “Only one student sustained an injury on the forehead during a struggle in a police pickup”.

The school had since been closed indefinitely as security agencies worked to bring the situation under control and conduct a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.

A meeting with parents and guardians had been scheduled to deliberate on the matter and to seek their support in preventing future incidents.

Mr Akamugri also instructed the Regional Director of Education to advise all heads of second-cycle institutions, to promptly report similar incidents to the appropriate security authorities.

He called on parents to support school authorities in the enforcement of rules, particularly those relating to the use of mobile phones on campuses.
