Mepe (V/R), July 23, GNA – The Mepe Youth Movement has made a formal appeal to traditional authorities, government representatives, development partners and philanthropists to support the construction of an ultramodern market square for the community.
In a statement, the group emphasised the urgent need for a dedicated, well-structured trading facility to replace the current Dzoxornutorkor market, which serves both as a commercial centre and a venue for key cultural events — including the Afenorto Festival regatta and entertainment activities.
This dual use, they noted, has over the years disrupted economic activity, particularly during festive periods when traders are compelled to vacate the premises.
“The lack of a purpose-built market continues to undermine commercial activity in Mepe, affecting the livelihoods of many families, especially women who rely on daily trading to support their households,” the statement said.
The youth are therefore advocating for the establishment of a modern market complex that will provide a clean, secure, and permanent environment for trade.
The proposed facility would feature adequate roofing, sanitation infrastructure, storage units, and well-organized stalls to promote orderly and uninterrupted business activities throughout the year.
The youth are calling on key figures, including Madam Victoria Amefadzi Yawa Doe, the District Chief Executive; and the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, as well as non-government organisations and private sector partners to help realise this development vision.
According to the group, the project aligns with broader goals of promoting local economic empowerment, enhancing food distribution, and encouraging entrepreneurship among the youth and women.
“Our vision is centered on creating a resilient and dignified trading environment that safeguards livelihoods while complementing the town’s cultural calendar,” the statement noted.
It added, “We urge all stakeholders to partner with us in making this vision a reality as we believe that with collective support and investment, the proposed market could serve as a model for integrated development, where economic progress and cultural heritage coexist in harmony.
