Assemblyman pleads for public toilet for Sakumono Village residents

By Laudia Sawer

Tema, July 21, GNA – Mr Gabriel Lucky Ocansey, the Assembly Member for the Woler electoral area in the Tema West Municipality, has pleaded with the Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) to consider providing adequate toilet facilities for residents in the community.

Mr Ocansey said due to the lack of adequate places of convenience, some residents resort to open defecating within the community or at the Sakumono beach, creating a potential health crisis.

He made the call when Mr Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and officials of the Assembly toured the electoral area to gather first-hand information on challenges facing communities in the municipality.

Mr Ocansey noted that although the population of the Sakumono village had expanded over the years, residents still use the only public toilet in the area, which has four seats each for males and females.

“The toilet facility was constructed before I was even born; it has now become weak. It has four-seater each for males and females serving the entire village, leading to some resorting to open defecation in the community and at the seaside.”

The Assemblyman said even though he was aware that there is a new regulation against giving permits for the construction of public toilets, the MCE and the assembly must consider the critical issue in the community and find a solution to it to help end open defecation and its consequences.

Mr Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, responded to the issue, promising to table it before the Assembly, for the needed redress.

He reiterated that there was a new regulation covering the construction of public toilets, indicating that he would speak with the sanitation officer to find out the best solution to the issue.

Touching on other issues observed during the visit, the MCE identified poor roads, drains, and sewage as major concerns in the municipality.

He said structures erected on sewer lines, drains, and portions of the roads would be demolished by the Assembly to bring sanity to the municipality.
