Accra, July 29, GNA – The Gold Coast Medical Foundation, in collaboration with the Ghana Dental School, has provided free dental care to 700 residents of Awutu Bereku in the Central Region.

The outreach included oral health screenings, cleanings, and basic dental treatments, targeting improved access to quality healthcare in under-served communities.

According to Dr Kwabena Boakye, Co-founder of the Gold Coast Medical Foundation, the initiative was part of broader efforts to enhance healthcare access in deprived areas.

“Dental hygiene is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Poor oral health can lead to many diseases and infections. That’s why we are here,” he said.

Dr Boakye urged the public to adopt good oral hygiene practices and avoid mouth-to-mouth contact to prevent the spread of infections.

The Ghana Dental School team expressed satisfaction with the community’s response and engagement.

Dr Emefa Apaloo, the lead dentist, said poor oral health is linked to systemic conditions such as diabetes, cautioning that tartar build-up and untreated infections could worsen chronic illnesses.

“We were able to screen and educate them on proper oral hygiene practices,” she said.

Dr Apaloo recommended dental cleaning at least twice yearly, adding that while often perceived as a luxury, it is essential and affordable.

She indicated plans to expand future outreach to include minor procedures such as simple extractions and commended the Foundation’s dedication to community health.

“Their investment in health is commendable. We look forward to partnering with them again to reach even more communities,” she noted.

The Gold Coast Medical Foundation is a non-profit organisation that provides free medical care, medicines, and mobile clinics to underprivileged and underserved populations.
