Dambai (O/R) June 27, GNA – The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, on the advice of the Oti Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument, reviewed the curfew hours for Nkwanta township and its environs in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region from 1800 to 0500 hours effective Thursday, June 26, 2025.
This stems from renewed spat in relations, leading to gunshots and burning of stores, destruction of properties, and two injuries when Akyodes performed rituals at the market on Wednesday to usher in the new yam, which incensed the Challas.
The government continues to urge chiefs, opinion leaders, the youth as well as people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area.
Meanwhile, there is a total ban on all persons in the Nkwanta township and its environs in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons and any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
Mr. Joseph Antwi Awal, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South, has confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
The dispute centered around the market square, where the purification rite was held, with the two groups holding different opinion, despite the Oti Regional Security Council’s (REGSEC) suspension of the 2025 Gyogyi Yam Festival over security concerns.
