Israeli strikes intensify in southern Lebanon, causing casualties

Beirut/Tel Aviv, June 29, (dpa/GNA) – Israeli strikes intensified across southern Lebanon on Saturday, targeting multiple locations and resulting in casualties, according to Lebanese security sources and the Health Ministry.

In the village of Kounine, an Israeli airstrike hit a car, killing one person and injuring another, the Lebanese Health Ministry said.

The Israeli military later confirmed the strike, saying it had eliminated Hassan Muhammad Hammoudi, described as the operative responsible for Hezbollah’s anti-tank missile operations in the Bint Jbeil sector.

Later in the evening, an Israeli drone targeted a motorcycle in the village of Mahrouni, also in southern Lebanon. The strike killed two people riding the motorbike, who had not yet been identified as Hezbollah operatives, according to the Health Ministry.

Two others were wounded when their car struck a roadside cement block during the strike, the state-run Lebanese News Agency (NNA) reported.

The attacks are part of ongoing cross-border hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which have surged in recent weeks despite international calls for de-escalation.

Meanwhile in Beirut, Hezbollah Secretary General Sheikh Naeem Qassem vowed to continue confronting Israel.

“We are capable of confronting and defeating Israel,” he said during a religious ceremony.

“Do you think we will remain silent forever? That is not true — we are a people who reject humiliation, and you have tested us before.”

The situation remains volatile as both sides continue to exchange fire, raising concerns of a wider conflict along the Lebanon-Israel border.

On Friday, the Israeli military said it had carried out a series of heavy airstrikes on Hezbollah facilities in southern Lebanon.
