GOC President Akpokavie congratulates Saminu on record-breaking performance 

Accra, June 01, GNA – Mr Richard Akpokavie, the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and Commonwealth Sports – Ghana (CSG), has congratulated sprinter Abdul Rasheed Saminu on his remarkable new national 100m record. 

The 27-year-old Ghanaian clocked a stunning 9.86 seconds at the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCCA) event on Friday, May 30, 2025. 

He shattered the national record previously held by Benjamin Azamati (9.90s), becoming the world leader in men’s 100m for 2025. 

This impressive feat not only showcases Saminu’s exceptional talent but also secures his spot at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, Japan, later this year. 

In a statement, Mr Akpokavie praised Saminu’s consistency and dedication, highlighting his notable performances, including a gold medal in the Africa Championship relay in Cameroon and a semi-finals appearance at the last Olympics. 

“Your record-breaking feat confirms your hard work and dedication. We are confident that you will continue to inspire stakeholders and make Ghana proud,” the statement said. 

Mr Akpokavie indicated that as Saminu prepares for the World Championship, the GOC and CGA have assured him of their fullest support. 

“We are proud of your feet, which has given Ghana global mileage through sports. Keep up your spirit and continue to make Ghana proud,” Mr Akpokavie stated. 

Saminu has solidified his position as one of Ghana’s top athletes, and his prospects look bright.
