GJA 2025 Elections: Proxy voting opens for eligible members

Accra, June 20, GNA – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Elections Committee has announced proxy voting in its National and Regional Executive Elections, scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025.

The arrangement, in accordance with the Association’s Election Guidelines, aims to ensure that no eligible member is disenfranchised due to travel, health challenges, or other legitimate constraints that may prevent in-person voting.

A release to this effect said, any paid-up member of the GJA in good standing who would be unable to vote in person on Election Day might apply to vote by proxy.

Proxy members would address their request to the Chairman, GJA Elections Committee, stating clearly the intention to vote by proxy.

This process would end by close of day on Monday, June 23, 2025.

“Members voting by proxy would nominate the proxies who must also be a paid-up GJA member in good standing,” the release explained.

“Details of the application should include the full name of the proxy, residential address, Ghana Card number, contact telephone number.”

Proxy voters are requested to submit original, triplicate of the complete Proxy Form to the GJA Elections Committee. Duplicate should be given to the proxy to present on polling day, and triplicate should be retained by the applicant.

Election officials say no individual would act as a proxy for more than one member.

Completed forms and relevant details should be submitted to the Elections Committee at [email protected].

It added that a secure link would be provided for applicants to access and complete the proxy form.

In a related release to encourage stakeholders to trust the proxy process, the Committee  assured all members and stakeholders that the introduction of proxy voting in the upcoming election was a carefully considered step aimed at promoting inclusivity and safeguarding electoral integrity.

“Proxy voting is a standard practice in many democratic systems worldwide, allowing eligible voters to participate even if they are unable to be physically present on election day,” the release explained.

“Please be assured that this process will be conducted with the highest standards of credibility and transparency, adhering to strict guidelines to prevent any potential abuse.

“There is no cause for concern. We have established robust measures to safeguard the process… and we encourage everyone to set aside any misconceptions.

“Proxy voting is a legitimate, fair, and transparent mechanism that upholds our democratic principles.

“Let us work together to ensure these elections are credible and truly reflective of the will of the people.”

The GJA Elections Committee recently completed balloting of positions for the upcoming national and regional elections.

A total of 12 national candidates and 50 regional candidates have been approved by the Committee to contest various leadership positions across the Association.
