Takoradi, May 06, GNA – The Western Nzema Youth League (WNYL), a youth group, has urged the government to treat opioid and other substance abuse among the youth as a national security issue and take decisive actions against it.
Dr Patrick Ekye Kwesie, Leader of the WNYL, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the rising trend of opioid tablet consumption among young people could have dire consequences on the individuals and rob communities of productive people.
He said: “The issue is a national canker that must not be entertained, and so I think the government must treat this as a national security issue and decisively eliminate it in our communities.”
He urged young people to recognise the dangers associated with these substances and said it could lead to a cycle of dependency that is difficult to escape.
“Opioids may seem like a quick escape from stress or pain, but they ultimately lead to more significant problems like addiction, health complications, and even fatalities,” Dr Kwesie stated.
He encouraged the youth to engage in healthier coping mechanisms, such as sports, arts, and community service, noting that such activities could provide alternative self-fulfillment without the risks associated with drug use.
Dr Kwesie also urged parents and community leaders to play active roles in educating young people about the dangers of opioids and other substance abuse to help save them from its devastating effects.
“The Western Nzema Youth League remains committed to fostering a drug-free environment and empowering the youth to make informed choices for a brighter future,” he said.
