Press Freedom Day: Bono Minister urges media to respect people’s rights in AI era

Sunyani (Bono), May 05, GNA – Mr Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister has urged the media to respect people’s rights, as they leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve job productivity.  
He asked the media to also utilise the new digital technology responsively as the government worked hard to enhance digital literacy, improve media infrastructure, and strengthen press freedom.  
The Regional Minister gave the advice at a forum to mark the 2025 World Press Freedom Day at Sunyani, organised by the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).  
The event on the theme: “Overcoming barriers to accessing information in the age of AI,” coincided with the launch of the third edition of the GJA awards of the chapter.  
Mr Akwaboa said technological advancement was associated with new challenges, and “AI presents both opportunities and risks to media freedom and information accessibility”.  
He stated that “while AI facilitate quicker data analysis, wider reach, and creative storytelling, it also brought up issues related to misinformation, disconnection, and digital divide.  
Mr Akwaboa acknowledged the vital role of the media towards elevating community voices, highlighting injustices and ensuring accountability in public service.  
Mrs Regina Benneh Siaw, the Acting Chairperson of the Chapter underscored the need for transparency and accountability from government and institutions regarding media literacy. 
She said that would aid media professionals in leveraging AI to improve journalism practice in the country. 
Mrs Siaw called for a collective approach in tackling challenges confronting the media in the era of AI and thereby deepened press freedom.
