Keta (VR), May 16, GNA – The management of Norlivime Basic School in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, has made a passionate appeal to the public for a fence-wall to be constructed around the school premises.
They said the fence wall was necessary to protect the school’s properties, teachers, and students from thieves.
Madam Vera Salu, the Headmistress of the school, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), during a commissioning and handing over ceremony of a renovated six-unit classroom block by the old students, expressed concern over the security of the school, citing instances of theft and vandalism that had occurred in the past.
“We need a fence wall to provide a safer and secure environment for students and teachers to allow them to focus on their academic and professional pursuits,” she said.
The Headmistress also highlighted the importance of protecting the school’s properties, including furniture, equipment, and other assets and noted that the lack of a fence-wall has made it easy for thieves to gain access to the school premises which resulted in significant losses over time.
Madam Salu revealed that the school has ambitious goals to become one of the best schools in the Keta Municipality and to achieve the targeted goals there must be the need for adequate infrastructure, including sporting facilities, a fence-wall, desks and other essential amenities to uplift the standard of the school.
“We are appealing to the philanthropists, well-wishers, individuals to help us construct a fence-wall around the school, it will also have us have proper control over students and prevent them from running away during contact hours”.
She said the school also needed computers and a laboratory to help enhance teaching and learning of ICT subjects to improve the progress of technology among students.
Madam Salu also appealed for other items which include sporting facilities, such as a football pitch, jersey, volleyball court, and other sporting equipment and emphasised that sports play an important role in the development of students, both physically and mentally.
She appealed to stakeholders, including parents, philanthropists, and government agencies, to support the school in its quest for improvement and expressed gratitude to those who have already supported the school and urged others to follow their example.
Some teachers and students GNA spoke with said that the fence-wall around the school premises would not only provide security but also help to define the school’s boundaries and create a sense
of ownership and would also help to reduce distractions and interruptions from outside during contact hours to allow students to focus on their studies.
They said that the move would create a safe and conducive learning environment, promote physical activity and healthy living, and enhance the overall educational experience and appealed to the public to provide the necessary infrastructure and amenities to support the development of the school.
